Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from another big weekend across the William Hill SPFL...

8 – Heart of Midlothian defeated Celtic 3-1 at Tynecastle to move eight points clear at the top of the William Hill Premiership. A Dane Murray own goal plus goals from Alexandros Kyziridis and Lawrence Shankland ensured that Derek McInnes’ side laid down an early marker in the title race. The Jam Tarts have picked up 25 points from their opening nine league matches – 14 previous clubs have done this in the top flight since 3 points for a win was introduced in 1994. Nine have won the league, four have finished 2nd, and only Aberdeen last season (5th) finished outside the top two. This is the biggest lead any club other than Celtic or Rangers have held in the top flight since Aberdeen in April 1985 – the Dons led by eight points over Celtic (who had two games in hand) and went on to win the title.

8 – Falkirk moved into the top six of the William Hill Premiership thanks to a 2-1 victory over Dundee at the Falkirk Stadium. Clark Robertson opened the scoring for Dundee but cancelled that out with an own goal, before Connor Allan netted a dramatic late winner for John McGlynn’s side. This was the first top-flight meeting of these sides since 1993, when Falkirk won 1-0 at Brockville thanks to a Richard Cadette goal. The Bairns have still never lost a league game to Dundee at the Falkirk Stadium – they have four wins and four draws in eight meetings, though the most recent before Saturday was back in 2014.

1 – Airdrieonians defeated Arbroath 1-0 at the Albert Bartlett Stadium to close the gap at the bottom of the William Hill Championship to three points. Euan Henderson’s penalty was enough to give the Diamonds their first league win of the season, under caretaker manager Aaron Taylor-Sinclair. Henderson has scored five league goals this season – he scored once for Hamilton Academical in the whole 2024/25 Championship campaign. The victory ended a run of 15 league games without a victory – their last success came against Partick Thistle back in April. Airdrie have now recorded four consecutive home wins over the Red Lichties, a run which stretches back to 2019.

3 – East Fife moved up to third in William Hill League 1 thanks to a 3-0 victory over Kelty Hearts at New Central Park. Kieran Millar, Jess Norey and Gregor Nicol all found the net as Dick Campbell’s side moved into a play-off spot and to within three points of leaders Stenhousemuir. This is East Fife’s third victory over their Fife rivals already this season – they already beat them in Kelty in the Premier Sports Cup group stages and won the opening league encounter in Methil. The three-goal winning margin is East Fife’s biggest in the third tier since August 2018, when they beat Forfar Athletic 4-0.

6 – Annan Athletic defeated Clyde 3-2 at New Douglas Park to move into the 3rd Round of the Scottish Cup. An Aidan Smith goal plus a double from player-manager Willie Gibson, one of them a last-minute winner, handed the Galabankies their first win in the competition since 2021/22. The last time 41-year-old Gibson scored a double away from home was over a decade ago, when he netted twice for Stranraer in a 3-1 victory over Brechin City at Glebe Park in League 1 in May 2015. Annan have picked up five wins and a draw in their last six matches in all competitions – this is their best run of form since November 2021-January 2022 when they picked up six wins and a draw in seven games.
