Weekend in numbers

Facts and figures from another huge weekend of SPFL football

1 – Celtic defeated Rangers 3-1 at Parkhead to close the gap at the top of the William Hill Premiership to one point. The Hoops trailed early on but Hyunjun Yang equalised before a Daizen Maeda double secured three crucial points for Martin O’Neill’s side. Maeda has now scored seven times against Rangers, making them level with Kilmarnock and Hibernian as the clubs he has scored most goals against since joining in 2022. Celtic ended a run of six league matches without a win over Rangers – their last win in this fixture was a 3-0 success in September 2024. This was the first time in 18 years that Celtic had come from behind to beat Rangers at Celtic Park  – since a 3-2 win in April 2008, when they trailed 2-1 before goals from Scott McDonald and Barry Robson turned it round.

3 – Kilmarnock moved a huge step closer to securing their William Hill Premiership safety with a 3-0 win over St Mirren at the SMISA Stadium. Two goals from Findlay Curtis plus a Miguel Freckleton own goal moved Neil McCann’s side four points clear of 11th-placed Saints with just two matches remaining. Killie ended a run of 14 away matches without a victory, since a 2-0 win over Dundee United back in September. This was their biggest away win in three years, since they defeated Dundee United 3-0 at Tannadice in May 2022. The Ayrshire side have lost just one of their last 14 league matches against Saints – they have eight wins and five draws, with the only defeat being a 5-1 loss in March last year.

0 – Dunfermline Athletic moved into the William Hill Premiership play-off semi-final, with a 0-0 draw at Gayfield securing a 1-0 aggregate victory over Arbroath. Aston Oxborough saved a late Aaron Muirhead penalty to secure the win for Neil Lennon’s side, who now face Partick Thistle. The Pars have kept five clean sheets in their last six matches – champions St Johnstone have been the only side to breach their defence in that period. Dunfermline are now just four matches away from returning to the top flight for the first time in 13 years. However, they have yet to beat Partick Thistle in four meetings this season, losing three and drawing one.

51 – Stenhousemuir moved into the William Hill Championship play-off final with a penalty shoot-out victory over Queen of the South following a 2-2 draw at Ochilview. Gregor Buchanan, Dale Carrick, Mikey Anderson and Olly Whyte all netted in the shoot-out, with goalkeeper Darren Jamieson making a crucial save from Nicky Clark. Five of the six meetings between these two sides this season finished in draws, with the only exception being a 2-0 Stenhousemuir win in January. The Warriors will now face neighbours Alloa Athletic in the final as they seek to return to the second tier for the first time in 51 years.

2 – Clyde defeated Spartans 3-1 on aggregate to secure their spot in the William Hill League 1 play-off final. The Bully Wee conceded early at the Vanloq Community Stadium but Scott Williamson’s second-half penalty sealed a 1-1 draw and comfortable progression to the final. Darren Young’s side have finished the season strongly, with five wins and a draw in their last seven matches, the only exception being a 5-0 loss to champions East Kilbride on the final day. Clyde now face Hamilton Academical in the play-off final – they have not won any of their last eight matches against Accies, with their last success coming in March 2007.

1 – Brora Rangers and Edinburgh City drew 1-1 at Dudgeon Park in the William Hill League 2 play-off final first leg. James Anderson opened the scoring for Brora but Divine Iserhienrhien levelled things up just before half-time to leave the tie evenly poised ahead of Saturday’s second leg at Meadowbank Stadium. The previous meeting of these sides came in the first ever pyramid play-off final back in 2014/15 – on that occasion they drew both legs of the tie 1-1, with Brora winning on penalties before losing the final to Montrose.
