Weekend in numbers

Facts and figures from another big weekend in the SPFL

11 – Celtic defeated Hibernian 2-1 at Easter Road on Sunday to move level on points at the top of the William Hill Premiership. Goals from Daizen Maeda and Kelechi Iheanacho helped the Hoops seal a crucial win to maintain the pressure on Heart of Midlothian and Rangers, who meet today, live on Sky Sports at 5.30pm. Iheanacho has scored four times in the Premiership this season and three of them have been winning goals. Martin O’Neill maintained his unbeaten league record at Easter Road as Celtic manager – he has picked up eight wins and three draws in 11 matches across his three spells in charge.

3 – Kilmarnock moved out of the bottom two of the William Hill Premiership with a 3-0 victory over Dundee United at BBSP Stadium, Rugby Park. Robbie Deas, Findlay Curtis and Joe Hugill were all on the scoresheet for Killie as they moved a point ahead of St Mirren with three matches remaining. The Ayrshire side have taken 16 points from seven home matches since Neil McCann took over in January and have scored 17 goals in the process. Killie are unbeaten in their last 11 matches against United in all competitions, winning seven and drawing four. The Terrors’ last victory over Killie was a 4-0 win at Tannadice in November 2022.

20 – Champions St Johnstone finished off a successful William Hill Championship campaign with a 1-0 victory over Ayr United at Somerset Park. Kai Fotheringham’s goal was enough to give Simo Valakari’s side all three points, ensuring they finished the season 11 points clear of runners-up Partick Thistle. Saints extended their unbeaten league run at Somerset Park to 10 matches – they have six wins and four draws since their last defeat back in September 1988. Friday’s shut-out was Saints’ 20th league clean sheet of the season, which is the highest for any Championship side in the SPFL era. The last team to hit the 20 mark in the second tier was Hamilton Academical in 2007/08. The Perth side’s tally of 77 points was the highest for the William Hill Championship winners in a decade – the last team to pick up more points was Rangers with 81 in 2015/16.

1 – Inverness Caledonian Thistle won the William Hill League 1 title thanks to a 2-1 victory over Hamilton Academical at the Caledonian Stadium. First-half goals from stalwarts Danny Devine and Billy Mckay were enough for Scott Kellacher’s side to finish two points ahead of challengers Stenhousemuir. Inverness were unbeaten in their final 18 matches of the season, which is their best unbeaten league run since they went 25 without defeat in 2018. This is the first time the Caley Jags have won the third-tier title – they were previously promoted as runners-up in 1998/99. It is their fourth league title in total – they won the SFL 3rd Division (fourth tier) in 1996/97 and the 1st Division (second tier) in both 2003/04 and 2009/10. Mckay’s goal was his 99th in the league for Inverness – if he carries on playing next season in the Championship he could become the first player to reach a century in the league for the Caley Jags.

5 – East Kilbride secured the William Hill League 2 title in style with a 5-0 victory over Clyde at The Ross Commercial Finance K-Park Stadium. A double from Connor Young and goals from John Robertson, Jack Leitch and Sean Fagan helped Mick Kennedy’s win the division by a five-point margin over Spartans. Robertson’s goal was his 20th in the league and his 32nd in all competitions. This was the fifth league title won by East Kilbride in their 16-year history – they won the Lowland League on four occasions before eventually gaining promotion last season. Kilby are the third newly-promoted club to win the League 2 title – they follow in the footsteps of Cove Rangers in 2019/20 and Kelty Hearts in 2021/22.
