More than four million fans will attend William Hill Premiership matches in a single season for the first time as title drama drives crowd numbers to new highs.
An impressive 3,901,065 have already attended matches in this season’s top-flight – ahead of a huge round of matches tonight and this final weekend.
Heart of Midlothian face Falkirk, live at 8.00pm tonight on Sky Sports, at a packed Tynecastle Park as they sit one point clear at the top of the table.
Second-placed Celtic travel to Motherwell, also live on Sky Sports this evening, four days after Fir Park welcomed one of its biggest league crowds in years when 12,306 supporters watched the club host Hearts on Saturday evening. Third-placed Rangers play Hibernian at Ibrox stadium in tonight’s final top-six match.
Only 98,935 fans would need to attend tonight’s three games and the remaining matches across the top six and bottom six this weekend to top four million fans for the season, which would in the process also surpass the previous top-flight record of 3,986,145 set last season.
These matches include the potentially massive final-day fixture between reigning champions Celtic and league leaders Hearts on Saturday May 16, live at 12.30pm on Sky Sports, as Derek McInnes’ men aim to win a first top-flight title since 1959/60.
The average attendance per round in this season’s William Hill Premiership currently stands at 107,521.
Neil Doncaster, SPFL group chief executive, said: “It’s been an incredible William Hill Premiership season so far, and it’s amazing to see that reflected in rising attendances across the country.
“This season’s top-flight has truly captured the attention of fans in Scotland and beyond, and supporters play a vital role in making our game so compelling.
“We’d like to thank fans for their incredible loyalty as we look ahead to some huge matches tonight and this weekend in front of packed stadiums, and we wish all clubs across the division the very best for these important games.”
The SPFL has already welcomed more than 5.1 million fans across its leagues, cup competitions and play-offs, and is closing in on its highest SPFL-wide attendances in a single season.
It’s more good news for Scottish football, after a UEFA report published in September last year revealed for the third year in a row, football fans across Scotland have recorded significantly higher top-flight attendances per capita than any other league in Europe.
